A few days ago, I was scrolling through my Instagram page and came across a photo I posted of a poem. I reread the poem and remember the relevance and importance of it today. It made me think about how the years haven't really changed and it's said to say they haven't. When I first read the poem, I felt so emotional because I was in a place that just wasn't a good place and this poem just was sympathetic to me. The poem is called: "Welcome to Society" by Eric Hanson.
Welcome to society, We hope you enjoy your stay, And please feel free to be yourself, As long as it's in the right way, Make sure you love your body, Not too much or we'll tear you down, We'll bully you for smiling, And then wonder why you frown, We'll tell you that you're worthless, That you shouldn't make a sound, And then cry with all the others, As you're buried in the ground, You can fall in love with anyone, As long as it's who we choose, And we'll let you have your opinions, But please shape them to our views, Welcome to society, We promise that we won't deceive, And one more rule now that you're here, There's no way you can leave. This poem just makes me think about all the injustice in the world and how it just drags you down until the death. It makes me mad and angry. This poem explores some of issues with society but not enough of the causes. I think the next time I write a poem, I want to try and amplify what causes the problems I faced or face while still giving the details.
